Within a few hours of Newnan:
Hike & Backpack, and Camp
1)
FDR State Park 36 miles South of Newnan,
23 miles of trail, nice waterfalls, nice campsites.
2) Cheaha State Park in
Alabama. It's not too far and has nice views and great hiking.
3) McIntosh Reserve - highway 16/27A north into Whitesburg, left on
Highway 5, look for sign, left.
4) The Chattahoochee National Forest and Cohutta Wilderness are only 2-3
hours North - almost limitless in the hiking possibilities.
5) Sweetwater Creek - http://www.friendsofsweetwatercreek.org/
6) Line Creek Nature Area is just over the Fayette County line going
into PTC. You'll see it on your right in a Comfort Inn Parking area.
A nice walk along Line Creek. One day we were there, we saw a snake with a
FULL belly laying in the shade, turtles, gorgeous shoals, and forest.
7) The Len Foote Hike Inn at Amicalola Falls is just above Jasper,
GA. Mary & I stayed 2 nights over this past Labor Day (2006). A
5 mile hike to the inn, minimal but
nice and clean accommodations, family-style breakfast and dinner (delicious!),
and most importantly: peace, and serenity with your favorite person. See http://www.hike-inn.com
for info and reservations.
Paddle
1) B.T. Brown Reservoir on
Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays only. Highway 29 N past Madras, left
onto Cedar Creek, right onto South Alexander.
2) The Flint River, put in at Woodbury
3) The Chattahoochee River, put in at Whitesburg
4) Lake Kedron in Peachtree City
5) Lake Montgomery, just East of Greenville, GA.
Biking
1) Road biking (touring) in the Northwestern part of the county, also the Coweta Welcome Center has road maps.
